A MATTER OF LIGHT
featuring Emily Gray Koehler & Amy Von Bargen
Constantly changing, light is the ecstatic energy of life. Even when dimmed or not perceived, it is warmth on a sun-soaked cat’s fur, it is the pinprick of a distant star in the dark canvas of the night sky, it is the converted sugars that sustain the red oak in your back yard and it is the infrared color we cannot see which guides a hummingbird to its favorite flower.
Printmaker Emily Gray Koehler, and potter Amy Von Bargen have collaborated to create a vibrant body of work exploring the ephemeral nature of light through their unique mediums. Emily’s vivid reduction woodcuts dance in the drama of light found in the natural world from the color-riot of a sunset or the sparkle of sunshine on water ripples to the unexpected richness of the sky at night. Amy’s hand-built ceramic forms delve into the abstracted textures of the world we perceive through light: the hint of a horizon line, the nod to celestial shapes and the chaotic dance of reflections on water. Despite their seeming disparate natures, these artists’ works together embrace the beauty of light in a celebration of that which sustains us on this vibrant blue dot in the cosmos.
OPENING CELEBRATION on Friday, June 5th from 5 to 8pm with the artists, live music and refreshments.
